Chapter 17

Through the Looking Glass

Petrah gasped violently awake.

His dream had been filled with fire so hot it made him lurch forward. He panted as if he’d been running away from endless rows of flames. In his dream, he’d seen his brother cross the threshold between Dagoth and Acia, then march with an army that swallowed the whole of Darkforth like a shadow. Aman took to a craggy bluff overlooking the ocean of followers. He lifted his hand to the stormy sky and lit the heavens afire. The roar of the inferno jolted Petrah from his sleep.

“He’s here!” Petrah cried. He was out of breath and soaked in a puddle of perspiration.

Petrah dabbed the moisture from his brow with his nightshirt, careful to avoid his blistered skin. His forehead ached and his temples throbbed as if jabbed by the trident of some mythical sea monster.

He peered up from the floor of the chamberlain’s apartment, over the lip of the bedspread at Ajoon’s covered form. She stirred, made a sound in her sleep, and rolled over. The rhythm of her slumber resumed. It was still dark, even though to Petrah’s enhanced vision, it was almost as bright as day.

He poured water from a pitcher into a basin and washed the salt from his eyes, face, and throat. The water dripped from his face into the basin with a tinkle that sounded like rain.

Petrah couldn’t break the vision of his dream.

It was real. I know it in my bones.

Aman was here in Acia. He was with the Watcher. His army was crossing over from Dagoth through the Watcher’s portal. The entire lot of them would be in Symorrah in the next week or two. They’d set up camp and brandish their black pennants and banners.

Then what?

Petrah looked up at the silver mirror hanging over the small commode. The face of a half-man, half-demon stared back through the looking glass. A face not unlike his brother’s.

We are cut from the same cloth, you and I, but we are different. And we will always be different.

That was the one thing Petrah could count on: his commitment to opposing his brother.

The problem was, Aman had an army that he had brought with him, with another waiting for him in Darkforth and a third coalescing in Terjurmeh. Eventually, the three would combine under a single banner—that of the Great One’s.

Time, as Petrah learned, was not on his side. Nor the side of the people who were going to get crushed in the jaws of the Beast.

There was one thing Petrah had to do.

He had to tell the queen.
